So, a friend of mine, a Christian who loves Jesus and loves telling others about Him posed a really good question. A thought provoking one. The question was, "Why is evangelism seen as a bad thing?" This was my answer to him: The word "evangelist" is rooted in three Greek words. "euangelion" which is translated to "gospel" as seen in Mark 1; "euangelistes" which describes a person that tells others about "euangelion" as seen in Acts 21:8 and Ephesians 4:11; "euangelizo" which means to "proclaim" the good news as seen in Romans 10:15. Evangelism is the English term combining those three thoughts into the activity of telling the gospel. Evangelism is seen as a bad thing because it is what God tells us to do and the world doesn't accept what God wants us to do. We as Christians are told multiple times in God's Word that we are go into the world preaching the message of God, telling others about the Gospel and making disciples. In Mark 16:25, we are told to "Go into all the world and preach the gospel to all creation." Who'd you rather please by doing what they want us to do? God or the world? Some Christians will try to justify not evangelizing by saying it is better to live life as an example or that it is better not to bother other people and let them live their lives, but that is not what Jesus tells us to do, nor us it what Paul talked about in his various letters. The thing is, we are to live our lives as examples of Jesus. Jesus certainly didn't only sit back and just be a good person and hope others would notice that and instantly seek out God. While He did lead the best life possible, He also evangelized consistently and everywhere He went. Left to our own devices, no man seeks after God. The Bible tells us that as well. So when we are seen as evangelists and are out there doing what God wants, the world hates that. The world, including more and more people that claim to be Christians don't like being told that what they are doing and how they are living life is not pleasing to God. And when we are seen as evangelists, we are seen as intolerant to the way people want to live. Gregg Hart (GS Contributor)
